THE BEGINNING

From Royal College to the Operating Theatre

Dr. Tharindu Samarajeewa grew up in Kiribathgoda, Sri Lanka — a straight-A student at Royal College, Colombo, who went on to earn his MBBS from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura on his very first A-Level attempt.

After graduating, he didn’t take the easy road. He chose the most demanding clinical environments he could find — first a Neonatal ICU, then an Emergency Treatment Unit in Akkaraipattu’s Eastern Province, and finally the Neurosurgical Emergency Unit at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka.

These years forged something rare: a physician who combines the calm precision of a surgeon trained in life-or-death situations with a natural artistic sensibility he’d carried since childhood. That combination would later become the defining quality of every hair transplant he performs.

THE JOURNEY

A Path Shaped by Challenge, Not Comfort

2010–2015

Medical School & Early Hustle

While studying medicine at University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Dr. Tharindu worked night shifts at private medical centres to fund his own education — independent from his family's business background and driven by a desire to earn his own way.

2015–2017

Internship & Neonatal ICU

After internship at Teaching Hospital Kuliyapitiya, he was selected for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit — a role typically reserved for more senior doctors. This intense environment sharpened his clinical precision and composure under pressure.

2017–2019

Emergency Medicine in the Eastern Province

He deliberately sought the most challenging posting available — the Emergency Treatment Unit of Base Hospital Akkaraipattu. For two and a half years he managed acute, life-threatening cases while simultaneously building his first private dispensary, which quickly became one of the most trusted in the area.

2019–2022

Neurosurgical Emergency & the COVID Frontline

At the National Hospital of Sri Lanka's Neurosurgical Unit, Dr. Tharindu was one of the first to adapt their ICU for critically ill COVID patients. During this period — when colleagues were migrating abroad and the country faced economic collapse — he chose to stay and to build.

2022

The Pivot: International Training in Hair Restoration

Recognising a significant gap in Sri Lanka's hair transplant landscape, he travelled to India, Turkey, Dubai, and Germany to train under world-leading surgeons. His neurosurgical and ICU background meant his learning curve was dramatically accelerated.

2023–Now

Dr. Hair: A New Standard in Sri Lanka

Launching at Ninewells Hospital with a hospital-based, doctor-led model, Dr. Hair quickly built a reputation through genuine patient outcomes. Over 250 surgeries later, the brand is now attracting international patients and establishing Sri Lanka as a destination for world-class hair restoration.

PHILOSOPHY

International Standards, Locally Accessible

Trained in India, Turkey, Dubai, and Germany — bringing world-class hair restoration to Sri Lanka, without the need to travel abroad.

Genuine Patient Care

Every patient receives transparent communication and a comfortable, professional experience — built on trust from the very first consultation.

A Vision for Medical Tourism

Built from day one with a global vision — attracting local patients, the diaspora, and international clients seeking trusted, doctor-led care.

PHILOSOPHY

Why He Left Neurosurgery to Change Hair Restoration Forever

In 2022, Sri Lanka faced simultaneous crises a pandemic, an economic collapse, and a mass exodus of medical talent. Dr. Tharindu chose to stay. And to build.

With his daughter newly born, his wife completing her internship in a different city, and fuel shortages making travel nearly impossible, he could have taken the safe route. Instead, he saw an opportunity that no one else was pursuing.

He noticed that hair transplantation in Sri Lanka was being done poorly in small, unequipped clinics, without real medical governance, without artistic vision. Patients were getting suboptimal results or travelling abroad at great expense. He decided to change that.

He invested heavily in international training, travelling multiple times to train under some of the world’s leading surgeons:

PHILOSOPHY
No Medical Governance

Most procedures were performed outside hospital settings, without anesthetic support or proper safety protocols. He brought hair transplantation into a fully equipped hospital environment.

No Long-Term Planning

Patients were given small, generic sessions with no thought for future hair loss or donor management. He introduced comprehensive, staged treatment planning.

No Artistic Vision

Hairlines were placed without regard for facial harmony or natural growth patterns. He introduced a design-first approach to every procedure.

No Global Positioning

Sri Lanka’s potential as a medical tourism destination for hair restoration was entirely untapped. He built with that global vision from day one.

Do the right thing consistently, even when no one is
Watching the results will follow.
Every surgery I perform,
I approach with one goal: to make it the best I have
ever done.

PHILOSOPHY

The Person Behind the Surgeon

His daughter has grown up watching him build something from
nothing and she tells people she wants to be just like him.

During the early years of Dr. Hair, Dr. Tharindu would finish a 12–14 hour surgery, wash up, and still take his family out even at midnight just to be present. He understood that what he was building was not only a practice, but an example.

His wife is also a doctor. Their household runs on mutual respect for the demands of medicine and a shared understanding of what it means to truly dedicate yourself to a patient’s wellbeing.

Outside the hospital, he has channelled his entrepreneurial instincts into La Luna, a Colombo café he created from a disused property during the economic crisis a testament to his ability to find opportunity in adversity.

His patients often describe him as unexpectedly warm and thorough. He takes time to explain everything. He answers questions honestly, including the difficult ones.
That transparency, he believes, is the foundation of everything.
